Job Description

Position Title: K-8 SCHOOL COUNSELOR Supervisor: Principal Category: Certificated

SUMMARY :

The K-8 School Counselor will assist students in developing decision-making skills, obtaining information about themselves, understanding opportunities and alternatives available in educational programs, setting tentative career and educational goals, accepting responsibilities for their own actions, developing skills in interpersonal relations, and utilizing school and community resources. The K-8 School Counselor will assure that each individual has the opportunity to explore, develop and express his/her own unique personality and talents.

QUALIFICATIONS :

Valid Oregon School Counselor License. Bachelors or Masters Degree in Counseling or equivalent counseling experience. Experience with children. Valid driver's license and automobile insurance. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES : Initiates New Student Orientation Assists students in developing decision-making skills and helps students to accept increasing responsibility for their own actions. Initiates counseling and guidance to individuals or families. Provides school counseling and guidance services upon parent and/or student request. Conducts 504 meetings and prepares 504 plans for K-8 Students. Attends student IEP meetings for K-8 SHAPA Students. Assists in identifying students with special talents or needs. Assists K-8 students in their adaptation to the school environment. Assists mentor teachers with reviewing educational plans. Provides teachers with specialized guidance material. Initiates parent and student conferences. Plans with administrators and teachers to provide appropriate classroom placement for students with special abilities and disabilities. Maintains continuous communication with school staff. Assists teachers in their efforts to communicate with students by providing liaison services. Organizes, coordinates and administers the keeping of student records as assigned. Knows the curriculum, district policies, rules, regulations, and guidelines pertaining to this position, and follows them conscientiously. Performs counseling responsibilities satisfactorily and continually self-evaluates professional performance. Accepts constructive suggestions and assumes responsibility for seeking help and advice for needed improvement. Cooperates with other staff members in the development, coordination, and evaluation of instructional programs. Completes assigned responsibilities within identified resources and timelines. Maintains confidentiality of student communications and keeps records as required by law, policy, and regulations. Fulfills performance standards identified in the evaluation process as required by the position. Represents the school, district and profession in the best manner possible at all times. Supervises student activities as required of all licensed staff. Performs other duties as required by the job or immediate supervisor. Fulfills working conditions and physical effort listed below.

WORKING CONDITIONS :

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is continuously required to sit and talk or hear. Occasionally the employee will repeat the same hand, arm or finger motion many times. The employee must be able to attend meetings in the evening and at other locations. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as ability to read handwritten or typed material, and the ability to adjust focus. The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES :

Knowledge: State and Federal laws relating to education. Use of software applications. Word processing, data processing, and spreadsheet applications. Proper English, grammar, spelling, punctuation, sentence construction and mathematics. Rules, regulations, procedures, functions and policies of the school. Skills and Abilities: Possess the physical ability to regularly attend work and fulfill the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation. Deal with the students, families, public, and staff in a pleasant and courteous manner in person, over the phone and in writing. Learn the laws, rules and procedures related to the position's responsibilities. Plan, organize, problem-solve and execute decision-making skills. Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability to manage work functions in a timely manner while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail. Demonstrate the ability to maintain the confidentiality of sensitive and confidential materials. Abide by federal requirements for a drug-free workplace. Maintain a high level of commitment to the completion of all tasks. Read, understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Apply an understanding of English, reading, spelling, mathematics and other subjects as related to the position. Learn the operation of computers and other equipment used in the work as required by the position. Establish and maintain accurate record keeping systems. Make mathematical calculations accurately. Learn the operation of copy machines, computers, and other equipment used in the work, as required by the position. Work successfully in a team setting.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE :

Completion of coursework satisfying the requirement for issuance of a valid Oregon Counselor License with appropriate endorsement in the designated assignment.

A valid Oregon Counselor License. Additional Information: Sheridan AllPrep Academy is a public K-12 online charter school serving students in Oregon. For more information about our school, visit You are not required to live in Sheridan to apply for this position, as much of the work is done from your home office. However, you must have the ability to easily drive to the locations we serve which currently include the areas surrounding Sheridan, Portland, Salem, Eugene, and Tillamook (this is not a complete list). Additionally, you must be available to attend occasional in-person meetings in Sheridan, OR or nearby locations. School Counselors will have a 205 day contract and will be paid according to the salary schedule found on our Employment page.
