Job Description

🦺 Field Safety Coordinator – Mining & Industrial Operations

Ensure safety excellence in high-rigor mining and industrial environments

Location: Arizona or New Mexico | Type: Full-time

🏢 About the Opportunity:

Meridian Engineering is a heavy civil and industrial contractor supporting projects across Arizona, New Mexico, and Colorado. In mining and industrial facilities, the stakes are higher, the risks are greater, and the rigor required is absolute. The Field Safety Coordinator is central to ensuring every shift and every crew meets the strictest standards of safety and compliance.

This role is not a “check the box” inspector — it’s a trusted partner in the field who conducts walk-arounds, leads tailgate huddles, enforces MSHA and OSHA requirements, and works alongside crews and superintendents to deliver safe, high-quality results.

✅ Successful Team Members in This Role Will…

  • Hold MSHA (blue card) and OSHA 30 as a baseline qualification
  • Conduct frequent safety inspections and audits on mining and industrial project sites
  • Lead daily tailgate huddles that reinforce trench safety, fall prevention, confined spaces, heavy equipment inspections, and concrete operations
  • Partner with crews and superintendents to analyze work, anticipate hazards, and create practical safe-work plans
  • Support the team by being part of the solution—coaching, advising, and following through on corrective actions
  • Document and investigate incidents, near-misses, and unsafe conditions promptly
  • Promote a proactive safety culture where workers are engaged and empowered to speak up

🛠️ A Day in the Life of a Field Safety Coordinator:

  • Start the shift with a site walk-around : check trench protections, fall prevention gear, equipment inspections, and high-risk areas
  • Facilitate a daily tailgate huddle with the crew, focused on the day’s specific tasks and hazards
  • Observe mining and industrial work in progress—piping, pumping systems, heavy equipment, and structural work—and reinforce safe practices
  • Collaborate with superintendents and field leaders to solve safety challenges in real time
  • Document safety inspections, hazard observations, and corrective actions taken
  • Assist in incident investigations and root-cause analysis if issues occur
  • Wrap up with safety logs, reports, and prep for the next day’s site needs

📈 Measurements of Success:

  • Zero tolerance for unsafe acts; proactive hazard identification and prevention demonstrated daily
  • All crews participating in daily tailgate huddles and engaged in safe-work planning
  • Trenching, fall prevention, confined space, and heavy equipment controls implemented without exception
  • Safety inspections completed consistently and documented thoroughly
  • Incidents, near-misses, and violations reported promptly and corrected without repeat
  • High worker engagement in safety culture—crews view the Coordinator as a partner, not just an enforcer

🧰 Qualifications:

  • MSHA (blue card) and OSHA 30 certification required
  • 3+ years of experience in mining or heavy industrial safety coordination
  • Strong expertise in trench safety, fall prevention, confined spaces, and equipment inspection protocols
  • Knowledge of OSHA, MSHA, and mine-site safety regulations and practices
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to lead huddles and coach crews
  • Ability to identify hazards, analyze risks, and design corrective or preventive solutions
  • Organizational skills for inspections, documentation, and reporting with accuracy
  • Team-oriented approach that emphasizes supporting the plan, supporting the crew, and being part of the solution

👉 Meridian hires safety leaders who protect people first, while supporting crews in getting the job done. If you’re ready to bring mining-level rigor, high expectations, and a collaborative approach to jobsite safety, we want to hear from you.
