The Natural History Museums of Los Angeles County (NHMLAC) include the Natural History Museum in Exposition Park and La Brea Tar Pits in Hancock Park. The NHMLAC is seeking a Program Manager, Internships for our Education & Programs department. The Program Manager, Internships will support the development and facilitation of internships and other work-based learning experiences that offer valuable opportunities to explore, contribute to, and continue in the many STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, mathematics) careers at our museums. In particular, the position is responsible for developing and launching the Tar Teens Internship Program, an annual spring/summer high school internship based at the La Brea Tar Pits and Museum that begins its first season in spring 2026.

Responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Develop and implement the Tar Teens high school internship program, including curriculum creation, recruitment, facilitation (spring/summer, annually), budget tracking, supply purchasing, event planning, alumni engagement, and evaluation coordination.
  • Provide supervisory oversight of and manage communication with teen interns and their families. Participate in and create frameworks for intern growth and development, and in coaching and/or disciplinary processes.
  • Coordinate and facilitate intern activities both onsite at the Museum and offsite during field trips and fieldwork experiences. This includes providing supervision, managing transportation logistics, and ensuring a safe and engaging learning environment across all program locations.
  • Cultivates relationships across departments; works closely with staff across the Museum on planning and implementation of programs, including staff in Research and Collections, Education, Exhibitions, Advancement, etc.
  • Oversees project-specific budgets for programs and initiatives. Supports data tracking, proposal/report drafting, and communication for grant-funded projects. Produces attendance and demographic reports as needed.
  • Support development and execution of an evaluation practice across programs and coordinate longitudinal evaluation in collaboration with Director, Evaluation & Museum Impact as well as Director, Volunteer & Internship Programs.

This position has the following requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree, equivalent experience, or coursework in science, history, education, museum studies, art or related field represented by the Museum.
  • Experience overseeing and coordinating people (staff, volunteers, teams, etc.) and associated project resources.
  • Experience communicating with and developing programming for Pre-K - 12 grade audience; background in working with diverse populations preferred.
  • Experience in project management and program development. Ability to multitask and handle multiple priorities; creative thinker and problem-solver; flexible, adaptable and reliable.
  • Experience with and openness to working with a wide variety of people. Ability to listen compassionately, facilitate, and engage in collegial relationships across departments and with outside partnerships.

The hourly rate range for this position is $26.00-$28.00 hourly and includes excellent benefits. This Full-Time Regular, non-exempt position is grant- funded and dependent on continued fulfillment of the grant award by the Vera R. Campbell Foundation.
