POLICE OFFICER OPENING


The City of Walcott, Iowa


The City of Walcott, Iowa is accepting applications for the position of a full-time Police Officer.

Requirement/Benefits Overview:

Applicants must possess certification from the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy and fulfill the minimum standards for Iowa law enforcement officers. Pre-employment physical, including drug and alcohol testing is required. Benefits include IPERS, 100% paid health and dental insurance, and holidays, vacation, sick, and personal days. Starting hourly wage is based on training and experience.

Basic Function:

Educates, enforces, and investigates City and State laws, regulations and ordinances to deter crime, accidents and incidents and ensures protection of the community.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Takes appropriate action to protect life and property; preserves the peace; prevents crime; detects and arrests violators of the law. Enforces all Federal, State, and City laws and ordinances coming within department jurisdiction.

  • Cooperates with the Sheriff's Department and other agencies for mutual aid out of the city limits. Maintains loyalty to the City, to the department as is consistent with the law, personal ethics, and professional standards.

  • Patrols designated areas in a radio patrol car to preserve law and order, to prevent and discover the commission of crime, and to enforce traffic and parking regulations. Answers calls involving fire, automobile accidents, misdemeanors and felonies. At scene of crime, shall administer first aid, conduct preliminary investigation, obtain evidence, and make arrests; file necessary paperwork; and may testify as a witness in court.

  • Interviews persons with complaints and inquiries and attempts to make proper disposition or direct them to proper authorities. Conducts accident investigations, providing first aid for the injured and making safeguards to prevent further accidents; interviews principals and witnesses, taking written statements; examines vehicles and roadways, observing traffic control devices and obstructions to view; takes necessary street measurements; clears the scene of obstruction and wreckage. Checks for overtime and other parking violations and issues tickets.

  • Serves warrants and subpoenas.

  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Maintains confidentiality of all sensitive information.

Mental and Physical Requirements:


  • May have to stand for long periods of time in extreme temperatures.

  • Have to remain in top physical condition to apprehend/detain combative individuals.

  • Requires occasional heavy exerting, liting, pushing, running, and unarmed combat.

  • Ability to occasionally lift up to ninety (90) pounds at times from floor.

  • Exposed to occasional armed combat which can be life threatening or result in bodily injury.

  • May also reach, kneel, carry, and grip objects intermittently during the course of work.

  • Ability to drive an automobile.

  • Works irregular and extended hours.

Working Environment and Conditions:


  • Performs work primarily outdoors during all weather conditions.

  • Exposure to air, water, and blood/bodily fluid pathogens.

  • Some duties performed indoors in a well-ventilated, well-lighted and temperature-controlled office environment. Noise level is at a minimum.

Education, Training, and Experience:


  • Requires a high school diploma.

  • Requires successful completion of the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy training.

  • Requires meeting requirements as stated in the Code of Iowa.

  • Pre-employment physical, including drug and alcohol testing, is required for this position.

  • Requires two (2) years of progressively more responsible work experience within a public law enforcement agency and demontrated knowledge of municipal, county, and state law regulations and ordinances.

  • Maintains current firearms qualification.

  • Requires a valid driver's license.
